Launch vehicle for Apollo 7 with Schirra, Cunningham and Eisele in first manned Apollo (Earth orbit only). Apollo 7, the mission that gave Apollo a reputation for success, was launched with this vehicle. The Saturn I lifted the Apollo CSM containing three astronauts into Earth orbit to test the CSM in space. An upgraded version, the Saturn IB, was used for the later Apollo Earth orbit missions - Apollo 9, Skylabs 2, 3, and 4, and Apollo-Soyuz.
