Ebony frame with brass index arm and fittings. Inlaid ivory plate on the back of the frame. Tangent screw on the front of the index arm; clamping screw on the back. Three socket shades (red, red, green). Index glass adjustment by screw; horizon glass by screw, lever, worm gear and clamping screw; back horizon glass by screw, lever, wing nut and worm gear. Sight vane with two pinholes and a swiveling shutter, back sight vane with one pinhole. Pencil cap and pencil are missing. Stepped mahogany box missing latch hook, repairs with brass plates, and containing trade labels for Joseph Sewell, Liverpool (1841-1895) and John Arrison, Hull. Calculations written in pencil on the inside of the lid.
