[nb-NO]Description[nb-NO]
Nocturnal for use with Ursa Major. Civil calendar scale divided every 2 days and labeled by initials. March 20 at top. Volvelle has hours (6-12-6) with aligned teeth. Longer tooth at 12 o'clock. Unused portion of volvelle is decorated with alternating stars and groups of 4 dots. Index arm is engraved with foliage and an architectural element. Fluted rivet. Handle also engraved with foliage and urn. A shield with oval cartouche is superimposed on the handle. Suspension ring.
On reverse, horizontal sundial and moondial for latitude 38 degrees. Sundial has folding gnomon (currently separated from base). Hour scale (4-12-8) on limb. Between 4 and 8 is the year "1572." Within the hour scale, age of moon (1-30). Lunar volvelle with pointer; inscribed with hours for moondial (4-12-8); and has aperture to reveal lunar phases marked by stippling. Center of volvelle inscribed with foliate decoration. A compass box is set on the handle. Its pressure fitting cover is attached by a chain to the suspension ring of the instrument. Inside the compass box is a 4 point windrose hand drawn with brown ink on paper. Needle missing. Handle of instrument is engraved with foliage as on the other side.
Both M334 and M-333 are nocturnals with sundials and moondials. M-333 is of much finer quality and certainly authentic. M-334 may be a cruder example from the same workshop or a competitor's workshop. The shield with cartouche, handle ornamentation, and shape of the index arm of M-334 are very similar to that found on M-336. Although M-334 is mathematically the better instrument, the common design features with M-336 suggest a shared history.
