[nb-NO]Description[nb-NO]
This Ptolemaic Armillary Sphere was crafted in 1542 in Italy by Alex Ravilius. Made of brass, the sphere contains the typical rings of an armillary sphere, denoting the equator, the tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, and the Arctic and Antarctic circles. The poles on this sphere are also able to be shifted to demonstrate the precession of the equinoxes.
At the center of the sphere, there is a terrestrial globe. There are a unique set of separate inner rings that help demonstrate the passage of the sun and moon across the sky. These rings are offset to the axis of the other central-Earth rings on an armillary sphere. The special rings are silvered with a lunar disk facing inward and engraved with crescent moon and lunar face. Offset to this axis, there is another special ring of the sun’s position and rotation. This is a stamped solar face on disk facing outwards.
The ecliptic band is divided every 30°, and every 1° is labeled with zodiacal symbols and names. The meridian of the sphere is mounted in a cradle, and labeled on that horizon circle, there is an inset magnetic compass, divided every 10°. The horizon circle is supported by 4 arms attached to an ornate base. The pedestal is a petalled flower, resting on the tails of 3 dolphins sitting on a triangular base with scrolling feet.
Internal equatorial axis. Latin labels with owner and maker named on colure of summer solstice.
