WRK-5 is is an astronomical clock that was manufactured by E. Howard & Company (based out of Massachusetts) between 1858 and 1874. At the time, astronomers were often uses clocks like this one. Yet, WRK-5's case was more ornate than many of the clocks being used at the time.
Originally, WRK-5 belonged to Dr. Ewell. Ewell was a Chicago amateur astronomer. Later on the clock was owned by Mr. Lacey Coe from Princeton University. Eventually the clock was on loan to the Adler in 1934, and in 1938 the Planetarium purchased the clock for the collection.
