Compass in sturdy brass case. Cardinal directions labeled N/O/S/W, probably German. Gnomon rotates up to perpendicular position for equatorial sundial. Hour lines marked at equal intervals, hence for equatorial sundial. Lid screws on over compass. Square base plate with "128" (?) punched at north-east corner.
