An elegant instrument for measuring magnetic dip and deviation. Vertical circle calibrated 90-0-90-0-90° every 1°. Inset plumb line along vertical brass diameter. Pyramidal silver plumb bob. Needle type 58. Vertical circle is hinged to a flat, vertical plate and secured by a thumbscrew. Turning the screw releases the circle, which can then be pivoted into a horizontal position for measuring magnetic deviation. Vertical plate attached to a turned pedestal resting on three feet. Three brass leveling screws with silver leaves on top. Three silver dolphins.
