Lodestone: Encased

Magnetite fully encased in silvered brass, secured by two screws. Suspension eyelet. Two iron prongs. Geometric engraving and engraving of a vessel entering a port with in the background a windmill. An engraved wind rose on the bottom of the casing has an indicator.

Inscribed on a long side of the casing: MAGNES | Prodigium Naturae Mirabilium thauma | turgus, et reconditae virtutie inscritabilis | Labyrinthus Hic solis navigations diri | git, et ad defideratos velisicantes in erro | nei ma ris incognitos femitis portus | deducit Inscribed on the other long side of the casing: Hoc Duce Portum mueniet | Prima dedit nobis magnetis Amalphis Inscribed on one of the short sides of the casing: Sud [&] Nord
