recto--Two gilt volvelles mounted on a back plate engraved with a canopy and scrollwork. Trimmed and pierced along scalloped edges. Upper volvelle with turning knob, notched and pierced to reveal festivals in German, month and number of days; zodiacal sign, constellation image, date sun enters sign, and symbol of planet connected with sign; lengths of day and night (hours and minutes); times of sunrise and sunset (hours and minutes). Strapwork and foliate arabesques. Lower volvelle; days of month (1-31); notched volvelle with turning knob, German names of weekdays with symbols of ruling planets alongside notch; age of moon (1-29.5); volvelle with pointer and knob; aperture to reveal lunar phases and stars; aspectarium. Strapwork. verso--Suspension ring to hang instrument on a wall. Date according to precession--1 Aries = March 21.
