Sector-like protractor. Top of one leg overlaps the top of the other leg. Protractor scales are drawn in a complete circle on lower leg. When legs are separated, the top edge of the upper leg acts as the index as it overlaps the protractor scales. Hinge of the instrument is a raised magnetic compass, blue/silver needle, type 6. Compass rose has four cardinal points, each marked by the first two letters of Italian winds. North-south is aligned with the inner edge of upper leg, with which it moves when legs are separated. Full protractor is divided "Anguli Interiores," 0-180 degrees by one degree, and "Anguli Exteriores," 180-0 degrees by one degree. Simpy-divided scales, one on each leg, for "Semipes Gallicus" (0-50), and "Semipes Romanus" (0-50). Legs both front and back are capped at ends with bars engraved with acanthus leaves. Reverse of protractor and compass has central floral engraving and scale "Pro Elevatione Bombardie.", 6-0-6. Also on reverse side of one leg is a decimal diagonal scale, 0-60 by 10, with 10 x 10 diagonal scale. Numbers up the vertical side of the diagonal scale are in reverse order from the norm.
