Around inset compass, red and green wax circles; azimuth in terms of traditional miners' division of circle into 24 points (1-12 twice, by quarters); Latin names of cardinal points (including "SEBTENTRIO" and "ORIENDT"). Rotating alidade. Spandrels of base plate decorated with stippled foliage.
