This is a 23" x 30" technical work study watercolor piece intended as a "first draft" proof of concept for the major Milky Way painting created by the same artist (A-450). This piece is unframed, and consists of various blue, green, red, black, and yellow colors representing the Milky Way galaxy. The piece is watercolor and ink on watermarked Arches paper. There is a signature and inscription at the bottom-right of the piece in pencil.
Object Story
This painting, as beautiful as it is, is actually just a work study piece, meant to inform the creation of an even larger piece in the Adler's collection (A-450). The artist, Frederick James Brown (1945-2012) worked very closely with Adler Planetarium staff and donors to create the larger piece. He spent hours researching the size, shape, and color of the Milky Way galaxy in order to make a painting that was not just beautiful to look at, but also informed by real scientific discovery. This piece is a work study; essentially a rough draft for his larger piece.
