Used heat shield fragment core used on the Apollo 13 mission, encased in plexiglass/acrylic cylinder.
Object Story
This is an actual Heat Shield sample (imbedded in plastic) taken from the Command Module of Apollo 13. It is charred by the tremendous heat generated by friction of the spacecraft traveling at thousands of miles per hour while reentering the Earth’s atmosphere. The sample is made of phenolic epoxy resin and was designed to wear away during reentry.
