Object Story
The first flights to the Moon were made with these craft. A three-staged Saturn V rocket lifted these vehicles to Earth orbit and toward the Moon.
The escape tower on top of the Command Module was to lift the astronauts away from the vehicle in case of a launch failure.
Three astronauts rode in the conical Command Module during launch and the six-day trip back and forth to the Moon.
Attached to the Command Module was the cylindrical Service Module. These two parts remained in lunar orbit, piloted by one astronaut, while two other astronauts landed on the Moon.
When in lunar orbit, two astronauts crawled inside the Lunar Module and began the descent to the Moon’s surface. At the end of their Moon mission, they would fly the Lunar Module ascent stage to their companion waiting in the Command/Service Module.
