Octant

Ebony frame with brass index arm and fittings, ivory plate on the back of the frame. Tangent screw and clamping screw on the back of the index arm. Three shades (jammed, but probably red, red, green). Index glass adjustment by screw; horizon glass by screw and lever, worm gear and clamping screw. Sight vane with two pin-holes and a swiveling shutter. Ivory pencil head and pencil are missing. Mahogany keystone box with a trade label for John Bliss & Co. New York (after 1845). Calculations in pencil written on the inside of the lid.

Signed on the inlaid ivory plate on the crossbar: "G. HEATH . ERITH . KENT."
