Object Story
This vehicle made the first two U.S. manned space flights. The Redstone rockets lifted the Mercury capsules containing the astronauts into two brief sub-orbited flights that took them beyond the atmosphere and to the threshold of space. During the first, on May 5, 1961, Alan Shepard flew for fifteen minutes twenty-two seconds to an altitude of one hundred sixteen miles. On July 21, 1961 Virgil Grissom repeated this feat whereupon his Mercury capsule sank into the Atlantic Ocean.
