Object Story
Alain Manneson Mallet (1630-1706) was a French mathematician and military engineer who served in the court of Louis XIV. Mallet was a travelled man who nurtured a special interest in surveying and geography. In 1683 he published an encyclopedic work in 5 volumes entitled Description de l'Univers.\n \n The first volume contains several astronomical illustrations, including this gracious rendition of Saturn as seen through a telescope, but placed (in clear disproportion) against a bucolic backdrop. Mallet used these visual arrangements in order to captivate the reader's attention.
