Object Story
Para-sail concept was studied very intensely during the early days of the Gemini Program in attempt to make controlled horizontal landings on land. The concept would use a gliding parachute similar to that depicted by the model or a paraglider, or “Rogallo Wing”, which could make a controlled horizontal landing on smooth ground at low speed. Difficulties with reliability of deployment of the Para-sail and in meeting the stringent weight requirements caused the concept to be abandoned.
