Description
Mahogany frame and index arm with brass section, inlaid ivory plates on the crossbar and on the back of the frame. Brass stop for index arm. No tangent screw; clamping screw on the back of the frame. Two shades (both red). Index glass adjustment by screw; horizon glass by screw, lever with a wing nut and clamping screw. Sight vane with two pinholes and a swiveling shutter. Ivory pencil cap and pencil are missing. Stepped dark brown stained wooden box, gouged out to accommodate the octant and a trade label for F.W. Lincoln & Co, Commercial Street, Boston (after 1858).
