Ebony frame with brass index arm and fittings. Brass stop for the index arm. Inlaid ivory plate missing from the back of the frame. No tangent screw, clamping screw on the back of the index arm. Three socket shades (red, red, green). Index glass adjustment by screw; horizon glasses by screws, and levers, wing nuts and clamping screws. Sight vane with one pinhole and a swiveling shutter; back sight vane with two pinholes. Ivory pencil head and pencil are missing. Two brass feet are missing, the left foot is broken a brass plate repair is on the left strut. In a stepped oak box painted white on the outside, and in the lid a trade label for Edmund Brown, 27 Fulton Slip, New York (1835-1840).

Signed (erased) on the inlaid ivory plate on the crossbar: "Made by J: Gaitskill, 332 Wapping LONDON" Marked: *George James 1823* [presumably an owner]
