Object Story
This early capsule looked crude compared to spacecraft today. The astronaut had little room to move in. The controls were designed to be easily visible from the custom-molded couch he sat in. The spacecraft atmosphere was 100% Oz at 5 psi, about 1/3 normal air pressure. The astronauts wore space suits in case of cabin depressurization. The red escape tower perched atop the capsule was to lift the capsule clear of the rocket in case of a launch failure. It was never used to help an astronaut escape, and after each successful launch was quickly jettisoned.
