A thumb screw, key or allen wrench would have been attached to this rectangular arbor in order to adjust a screw plunger below the leather bottom of the cistern. Tube enclosed in a mahogany case of cylindrical and rectangular shape. Door with 2 latch hooks near top of case opens to reveal a silvered V-shaped recess. Barometer scale 21.6-31 inches every 10th with vernier to 100th inch on right wall of recess. Vernier operated by a screw below door. On left wall of recess, information on the "Newtral point" at 29.86 inches, capacity of 1/50 and temperature of 65 degrees Fahrenheit. Spirit thermometer on inside of door graduated -5-0-131 degrees Fahrenheit and -21-0-55 degrees Centigrade. "Freezing, Temperature, Sum[me]r Heat, Blood Heat" marked. Brass suspension ring. Style of marine barometers but without gimbal mounting. Likely intended for home use.
